Wonderland
We’re excited to be one of the entrants of this year's Sculpture by the Sea exhibition. The Frost* team have created a site-specific installation using our signature typographic approach.
138 fluorescent orange letters spell out a verse from the introductory poem All in the Golden Afternoon from Lewis Caroll’s famous book “Alice in Wonderland”. The verse stretches across more then 600m of the Tamarama beach fence. The low impact nature of the installation encourages the audience to re-consider how they look at the environment.
The team was really inspired by the history of Tamarama. The idea for the installation is based on the controversial theme park “Wonderland City” that was built on the beach over 100 years ago. To prevent the public from entering a fence was erected. The fence became a symbol of rebellion, with residents cutting through it to gain access to the beach.
Rather than having a finished artwork in mind prior to the entry submission, we researched the history of the site and explored various concept designs. We felt there was more strength in using a pre-existing structure to surprise audiences by transforming something they walk past everyday.
The words of the verse come together in a playful display that follows the natural coastline at Tamarama Beach. Frost’s Wonderland artwork will be on show until 15 November 2009. We’d love to see you there.
